The International English Honor Society

Tau Rho Chapter

Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society. A member of the Association of College Honor Societies, it was founded in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University.

The Society strives to

  • confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies;
  • provide, through its local chapters, cultural stimulation on college campuses and promote interest in literature and the English language in surrounding communities;
  • foster all aspects of the discipline of English, including literature, language, and writing;
  • promote exemplary character and good fellowship among its members;
  • exhibit high standards of academic excellence; and
  • serve society by fostering literacy.

With over 750 active chapters located in Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States, there are more than 1,000 faculty sponsors, and approximately 8,500 members inducted annually.

The Potsdam Tau Rho Chapter

The Potsdam Tau Rho Chapter invites eligible students at the beginning of every spring semester. Membership is a significant honor and recognition of your record of academic distinction. Whether you intend to go on to graduate school or to use your knowledge in the writing, business, or teaching professions, membership in Sigma Tau Delta provides many significant opportunities. Society members are eligible to participate in an annual conference; to contribute to The Rectangle and The Sigma Tau Delta Review; and to compete for writing prizes, scholarships, and internships. See the national website at www.english.org for more information.

Our Tau Rho Chapter has two events per year: a Halloween literary reading and fundraiser in the fall (every second year) and an Induction Ceremony every spring. We encourage you to become involved, if you wish, and to help plan and carry out these two events. Other than that, we do not have regular membership meetings or obligations.

New members pay a one-time dues fee and are invited to an induction ceremony and brunch each year. Watch for an invitation letter in January.

Criteria for Membership

English majors or minors considered for undergraduate membership must have at least sixty credit hours, a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0, and a grade point average in literature/composition courses of 3.25.

Graduate students considered for graduate membership must have at least nine credit hours and a grade point average of 3.3.
