Learn more about President Smith.
More than 200 years ago, in 1816, the residents of Potsdam, N.Y., founded the St. Lawrence Academy – one of America’s first 50 colleges. Over the next two centuries, the college became a public university, eventually joining the new State University of New York system upon its founding. From our humble beginnings in a one-room schoolhouse, The State University of New York at Potsdam has grown to become a leader in creativity, applied learning and educational excellence.
Learn about SUNY Potsdam and our rich history.
President Smith has asked that those who wish to make gifts in her honor, join her in supporting the Potsdam Promise. Together, we can elevate engagement throughout our entire community, fortifying Potsdam’s success well into our third century.
"Your gift to this fund will provide versatile support for collaborative efforts to recruit and retain students, unique educational experiences, reimagined community connections and partnerships, hands-on learning, training and development of in-demand programs."

Academic Regalia
Although originating in the Middle Ages, the use of academic dress in the United States has been continuous since colonial days. The most distinctive feature of American academic dress is the hood, which indicates by its color and design its wearer’s degree and the institution which conferred the degree. Hoods vary in length according to degree and are lined with the color of the college or university granting the degree. They are faced with a color indicating the subject of specialization.
The Mace
In academic ceremonial processions the mace is used as a symbol of leadership. The grand marshal who carries the mace is thought to be the seer, who lights the path of wisdom to those who follow. The mace used in today’s ceremony was designed by Harry Doelger and first used in the College’s 1990 presidential inauguration. It is carved in cherry wood and features a pewter orb, upon which is emblazoned the university seal and the engraved motto, “A Tradition of Excellence.”
The Medallion
The medallion, or chain of office, signifies the authority and corresponding responsibility that is vested in the Office of the President. The silverwork chain includes a trove of garnets, and its pewter orb is emblazoned with the State of New York coat of arms. The coat of arms depicts Liberty and Justice standing on either side of a shield, upon which is engraved a rising sun behind a range of mountains. Beneath the shield is the same motto as that found on the mace, “A Tradition of Excellence.” The president’s medallion is worn with academic robes on official College celebrations and formal convocations.
