M.S.T. Childhood Education

The Loading... program is 100% online and is recognized and accredited nationally by CAEP, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (formerly NCATE, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education). Canadian students who complete this program and all New York State teacher certification requirements are eligible to apply to the Ontario College of Teachers for Ontario certification at the primary / junior divisions. This program is intended for candidates who do not hold a teaching certificate and seek to earn certification in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6). 

What You Will Learn:

  • The skills, pedagogical knowledge, and disposition necessary to become a successful classroom teacher in grades 1–6.
  • Cutting edge, inclusive teaching strategies that make learning exciting and accessible for your students.
  • Deep understanding of the methods for teaching literacy, math, science and social studies, providing the foundation to create and teach effective curriculum.
  • Creative approaches for integrating technology into your classroom.
  • Multiple opportunities to grow, take risks, and develop your own teaching philosophy.
  • Communication skills to enhance your ability to teach in a collaborative environment.

Our program is committed to preparing knowledgeable and passionate teachers with strong commitments to equity and diversity, social responsibility and critical reflection.

The Fieldwork Experience:

  • Completion of 100 hours of fieldwork in a local school prior to student teaching, gaining hands-on understanding of educational environments and innovative strategies used in today's classrooms.
  • One semester of student teaching, including two 8-week placements in grades 1-3 and 4-6.
  • A close relationship with your field supervisor, who is committed to offering the support and insight you need to reach your highest potential as an educator.

  • Student teaching placements frequently result in full-time employment upon graduation. Our faculty has a large network of contacts in the field that lead to information about job opportunities, and our graduates regularly call for recommendations to fill positions.
  • Advisement for Canadian students seeking Ontario certification. Ask us for details!
  • Opportunities to attend professional development workshops and/or conferences to help further your understanding of educational content and pedagogy.
  • Small online class sizes promote close relationships with professors and fellow childhood education classmates. Students graduate with a cohort who provides support throughout the length of their future careers.
