Title: Applied Learning and Digital Development in Historical Costuming: A Sustainable Approach
The purpose of this project is to develop and advance the technical skills of costume design and historical costume construction as well as to expand intellectual resources related to costume technology and historical research. As I hope to pursue a career in Historical Fashion and Costume Design, this undertaking will allow me to graduate with an expanded scope of skills integral to success in my career fields and will strengthen my pursuit of success in graduate work and/or entering the workforce in my chosen occupation. The program will also support my personal goal to increase awareness of sustainable practices in theatrical costuming and fashion, as my project will place emphasis on responsible fabric sourcing and natural fiber usage and will employ digital design methods. Research methods to be used include visual analysis of extant garments, secondary source document survey of historical fashion periods, and the use of published works to support the development of skills required in the project. Creative techniques to be used will include digital garment design using Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop, basic and advanced sewing techniques, as well as pattern drafting and fitting. Skills needed for this project are digital design proficiency, advanced pattern drafting and fitting, and advanced garment construction; I will acquire these skills through digital and print resources, verbal coaching and guidance from personal mentors, and applied practice.
