How Do I Give a Lecture (with or without slides)?
There are two main ways to deliver a lecture remotely:
- Through an online meeting – please go to the How do I Have a Class Discussion? section
- Through a recorded video.
Below you’ll find information on the various ways you can record a video and other functions related to video recording.
How Do I...
Relay- Using Relay and a webcam is one of the easiest ways to record yourself lecturing.
Camcorder- If you have a digital camera, you can upload videos to Relay as long as they’re in the MP4 format.
Smartphone/Tablet- If you have a digital device, you can upload videos directly to Relay using the Fuse app (free).
In addition to the options listed above in record my lecture, you may need a stand to hold your webcam/camera/device. Contact cci@potsdam.edu to request equipment to borrow. Also, you will need to get permission from your Dean/Chair to access campus spaces.
Using a Camcorder or Smartphone is likely the best tool. If you need to borrow equipment, contact cci@potsdam.edu to submit a request.
Relay- Using Relay and a webcam (or a headset), you can record anything that displays on your screen.
Skype for Business/Zoom/Teams- Since you can record an online meeting, you can record anything that displays on your screen when you use the Screen Share feature.
PowerPoint- Although using Relay is easier, you can technically produce a narrated video using record in the Slide Show tab in PowerPoint to record your presentation.
Zoom/Teams- With a webcam (and/or a headset), you can record your meeting and also your screen when you use the Screen Share feature.
Relay- Although Relay only has a simple editor that allows you to trim, you can create videos that look and feel like they were edited using special feature like Pause recording and webcam On/Off. Watch the Video Basics 101- Create a video using Relay and PowerPoint (8 of 9) video for more information.
iMovie- For Mac users, iMovie is a full video editor.
Photos- For Windows 10 users, Photos has a light video editor with many features.
Stream- For videos uploaded to Stream, it has a simple editor that allows you to trim.
PowerPoint- Although using Relay is easier, you can produce a video using Slide Show record. This feature records each slide individually. Although this isn’t really “editing,” it does help you create a video that is more polished.
Relay- The best place to upload your videos is Relay. Then you can share them directly with a link or add them to Moodle.
Stream- Videos created in Teams are automatically uploaded to Stream. Then, you can share them directly with a link or add them to Moodle.
OneDrive- Although you can share any file (including videos) from OneDrive, this is by far the worst option available using campus tools.
Relay/Stream- Once a video is uploaded, you can use the Generate Captions feature to auto-create captions. When they are ready, you will have to review/approve them before they will be published.
Relay/Stream- Use the Add Quiz Question feature to add Multiple-choice, T/F, Short Answer, and Long Answer questions.
Relay/Stream- In order to be successfully uploaded, both platforms require standard MP4 file format. Use Handbrake to convert any video file to MP4.
Relay- If your video fails to upload to Relay due to the file size, download and install the Relay Classic Record. Login to Relay and find the gear icon on the top-right corner to download.
Skype for Business- When you record a meeting, it is recorded by the Recording Manager program and the video file is saved to your computer. It will take some time for your video to be processed. If you’re having trouble finding it, search for Recording Manager to open the program. Select the video file and browse.
Zoom- When you record a meeting, the video file is saved to your computer. It will take some time for your video to be processed. If you’re having trouble finding it, search for the Zoom recordings folder.
Relay/Stream- In order to be successfully uploaded, both platforms require standard MP4 file format. Use Handbrake to convert any video file to MP4.
Relay/Stream- Both have tools to leave time-stamped comments within a video. Relay’s Conversations tools is more robust, allowing for the drawing of simple shapes and arrows. In Stream, you need to enter the time (eg. 02:32) when you enter a Comment.
