How Do I Give a Quiz, Test, or other Written Exam?

How Do I Give a Quiz, Test, or other Written Exam?

Moodle is likely the best tool to use for testing as it has the most options and features. That said, if you’re using Teams, you can add simple quizzing using Microsoft Forms either directly or using the Teams Assignment feature.  Please remember that you can use video recording for various forms of assessment (see Knowmia).  Whenever possible, please be sure to create assessments that can be completed using digital tools.

How Do I...

Forms: Microsoft’s simple, lightweight tool that lets you create a form.  Although it is usually used for surveys, quizzes, and polls, it has basic form question types (Multiple Choice, T/F, Short Answer, Long Answer).  Through a link, it can be added almost anywhere.

Moodle: Has three different survey tools that do slightly different things: Quiz, Questionnaire, and Feedback.  The Quiz option provides complete testing functionality.

Teams: Those wanting to provide quizzing within Teams should use Microsoft Forms. The Assignment feature also uses Forms.

Qualtrics: Although in most instances, instructors will find using Moodle Feedback/Questionnaire or Microsoft Forms easier for basic class polling and quizzing, Qualtrics is the campus official survey tool.  It has powerful survey and polling tools.

Top Hat: If you are a Top Hat user, you should now have expanded testing options.  Check your account.

Google: Although Google Forms is not recommended, it does have some features that are not available in MS Forms.

Although the campus no longer has a scantron service, there are many digital alternatives to paper scantron forms.  As listed in the add a quiz or test section above, you can use Moodle, MS Forms, Qualtrics; etc. to create exams that can be administrated digitally.  If you need to hand out test questions by paper, you can still use these digital tools to collect answers (watch Using Google Forms Instead of Scantron for an example of how this can be done). Finally, although the campus does not recommend (or offer) scantron “apps,” there are many out there that allow instructors to scan and grade paper exams using a smartphone or tablet (e.g. watch ZipGrade Tutorial).

Knowmia/Stream- Use the add quiz question feature to add Multiple-choice, T/F, Short Answer, and Long Answer questions.

Word: You can create Word documents that contain tables, images, special formatting, information, etc. that students can download/save-a-copy.

Forms: Microsoft’s simple, lightweight tool that lets you create a form.  Although it is usually used for surveys, quizzes, and polls, it has basic form question types (Multiple Choice, T/F, Short Answer, Long Answer).

Moodle: Has simple forms as well (Questionnaire/Feedback).

Acrobat Reader DC: Adobe licensing has changed and access to Acrobat DC (to create PDF forms) is limited.  Consider using other easier to use tools like Microsoft Forms or Moodle Questionnaire/Feedback, if you want students to fill out a form.  That said, please see the CTS site for special info on student access to Adobe Creative Cloud.

Whenever possible, assign quizzes that can be completed using digital tools.  If there is no other way, print “exams” can be uploaded.

Print Item: The easiest way to convert a print item (or other physical item) is to take a picture with a smartphone, tablet, or webcam. The image file can then by downloaded/upload/emailed.

Whether you need to upload an image/picture/drawing, you can use the upload file features of Moodle, Teams, or OneDrive.  Once uploaded, the file can be shared by link.

Moodle/Teams: Both have an Assignment feature that allows students to upload files.

Forms: Microsoft’s simple, lightweight tool that lets you create a form.  Although it is usually used for surveys, quizzes, and polls, it has basic form question types (Multiple Choice, T/F, Short Answer, Long Answer).
