The College invites applications for the Chief of University Police. Selected candidate will provide leadership and direction for a staff of two lieutenants, seven officers, three support staff and several student dispatchers.
Responsibilities include: department goal setting and assessment; supervise the maintenance of law and order on campus and the enforcement of Federal, State and local laws as well as the rules and regulations of the College; ensure compliance with all Federal, State, and local reporting requirements including Clery Act (Campus Crime Reporting Act), Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and Title IX compliance; create a culture of diversity, equity, inclusivity, and social justice; develop preventative safety programs to control crime on campus; review all reports submitted by University Police personnel and communicate with appropriate personnel concerning incidents and investigations; serve as the liaison with other law enforcement agencies to ensure a mutual understanding of policies and procedures; supervise the scheduling of personnel to ensure their efficient deployment; serve as the liaison with the SUNY System Administration Coordinator of University Police in matters concerning recruitment, training and deployment of police personnel; ensure that the University Police officers receive basic and in-service training as required and needed. Serve as a lead for the campus emergency response resource group and other committees as assigned; and responsible for maintaining the accreditation of the department.
Required qualifications include: Bachelor’s degree or associate degree with at least 10 years of experience; demonstrated experience with community policing; current Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC) Certification as a Police Officer in New York State; a record of progressive leadership and management responsibility in a law enforcement agency (campus setting preferred) as a supervisor, investigator, or campus law enforcement administrator, and/or municipal law enforcement administrator, recognized by the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as a certified agency in New York State; demonstrated experience working with and leading diverse constituencies; Valid NYS Driver’s License and have the ability to drive a motor vehicle; at the time of appointment selected candidate must reside in NYS; must be available during all shifts to respond to emergency situations; incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain the necessary firearms permit(s) in accordance with organization policies and legal statutes as a condition of continued employment; strong knowledge of higher education law enforcement policies, practices, techniques, accreditation standards, and federal and state law including the Campus Crime Reporting Act (Clery Act), Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and Title IX compliance; and demonstrated experience in managing a crisis or Incident Command Post.
Preferred qualifications include: Master’s degree; a record of progressive leadership and management responsibility in a campus law enforcement agency as a campus law enforcement administrator, and/or municipal law enforcement administrator recognized by the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as a certified agency in New York State; experience working in an Accredited Police Department and Leadership Training such as FBI National Academy; experience and direct involvement in the successful maintenance of the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (LEAP); and training or experience in employee assistance programs, crisis intervention, or a combination thereof.
