Crane Faculty Recital Series Continues Feb. 11 With Julianne Kirk Doyle & Michael Sitton

Professor of Clarinet Julianne Kirk Doyle will perform in recital alongside Crane School of Music Dean Michael Sitton on piano.

SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music invites the public to enjoy a faculty recital featuring Julianne Kirk Doyle on clarinet and Dean Michael Sitton on piano, on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 3 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

This clarinet and piano recital will include Eugene Bozza’s “Bucolique” (1949), Robert Muczynski’s “Time Pieces” (1984), and Mario Castlenuovo-Tedesco’s “Sonata” (1977).

This event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

About the performers:

Dr. Julianne Kirk Doyle serves as professor of clarinet and director of the Crane Youth Music Camp at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music. Doyle has presented masterclasses for the Southeast Asian Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, the Aria Summer Music Academy and the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, as well as at the University of Michigan, University of North Carolina-Greensboro, Louisiana State University, University of Arkansas-Ft. Smith and Bowling Green State University. Her conference appearances include the Midwest Band/Orchestra Clinic, International Clarinet Association, International Double Reed Society, New York State School Music Association, New York State Band Directors Association, Mid-America Center for Contemporary Music and the Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium. She serves as editor for the clarinet repertoire section of the NYSSMA manual, and is currently researching the Velopharyngeal Insufficiency in wind playing, to develop methods of alleviation and prevention. Doyle performs regularly with the Aria Reed Trio, Northern Symphonic Winds and the Orchestra of Northern New York. She holds the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Oklahoma. Her primary teachers include Jon Manasse, David Etheridge and Bradford Behn. She is an artist with both Backun Musical Services and DANSR/Vandoren.

A native of North Carolina, Dr. Michael Sitton has served as dean of The Crane School of Music since 2009. He held previous appointments as dean of fine arts at Eastern New Mexico University, and as a professor, department chair and administrator at Hollins University in Roanoke, Va. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance and literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His Master of Music degree in piano performance was earned at the University of Kentucky, and he completed his Bachelor of Music degree summa cum laude at North Carolina's Mars Hill College. He also holds the Diplôme de Concert from Schola Cantorum in Paris, where he studied as a Harriet Hale Woolley Scholar of the Fondation des États-Unis. His principal piano teachers were Professor May Jo Gray, Professor Nathaniel Patch, Dr. Kenneth Drake and Mme. Gaby Casadesus. Sitton has appeared widely in solo, concerto and collaborative performances as a pianist, including a solo recital at Weill Hall in New York as the winner of the Leschetizky Prize. Other performances have included recitals in France and at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., and in numerous performances as a vocal accompanist and in chamber ensembles. Sitton has also published and presented frequently in the field of piano pedagogy, including articles in The American Music Teacher, Clavier, Piano Quarterly and Keyboard Companion. He is a composer, primarily of choral music, with compositions in the catalogues of eight publishers; his works are frequently performed and broadcast throughout the country, have been recorded by a number of ensembles, and have been honored with awards, including annual ASCAP awards since 1993.
