Three Vocalists from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music Chosen for Janiec Opera Company Summer Program at Brevard Music Center in North Carolina
Three student vocalists from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music have been selected to join the Janiec Opera Company based at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, N.C., this summer.
Each summer, the opera program at the Brevard Music Center enrolls approximately 30 singers who, together, constitute the Janiec Opera Company. The students will present mainstage productions, along with an orchestra, working alongside professional directors, designers and costumers, from June 2 to Aug. 4.
Three Crane students were chosen, following nationwide auditions. The singers include:
- Emma Marhefka, soprano, of Allentown, Penn.
- Dominique Santiago, mezzo-soprano, of Saranac Lake, N.Y.
- Craig Smith, baritone, of Fairport, N.Y.
This year, the Janiec Opera Company will present Carlisle Floyd’s “Susannah,” Charles Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette,” and Johann Strauss Jr.’s “Die Fledermaus.” In addition to the mainstage performances, the company presents special performances, such as Broadway medleys and “opera’s greatest hits,” alongside the Brevard Music Center Orchestra.
Students also get to take part in masterclasses and coaching sessions, daily opera and movement classes, audition-style workshops and outreach performances for the local community. Brevard’s mainstage opera productions and special concerts are presented in the Porter Center at Brevard College. To learn more, visit https://www.brevardmusic.org/institute/college/opera.
