A search is in process for a Facilities Manager for The Crane School of Music with a beginning start date in January 2019. The position has general facilities oversight for the Crane Music Center, a complex totaling approximately 90,000 square feet. Daily management of two major performance spaces, with oversight of concert production for more than 300 concerts annually, including solo performances, small and large ensembles, and guest performances.
Responsible for inventory of theater/concert hall equipment. Ensures production material and supplies inventory are adequate for the effective operation of the building and events. Hiring, supervision, and management of student work crew, with responsibility for safe and responsible operation of the facility and for the safety of audiences and facility users; effectiveness in teaching relevant skills to students in work crew. Supervision of one clerical staff member. Using the campus EMS scheduling system, maintains a comprehensive calendar for the complex, schedules all student recitals, and manages non-academic scheduling of spaces; works closely with guest performers and/or other approved outside users of the facility. Acts as the campus building administrator, collaborating frequently with Physical Plant, other campus offices, and external regulatory authorities with regard to the safe and effective operation of the building and its ongoing maintenance and upkeep. Manages a budget for routine facility expenses and collaborates with the Dean and Physical Plant on major upkeep projects.
Collaborates with other professional staff, including the Facilities Manager of the adjacent Performing Arts Center, the Crane Audio/Video Engineer, Instrument Technician, and Piano Technician, Community Performance Series director, and others as needed/appropriate. Works closely with the Crane School of Music Dean, Associate Dean, and faculty leadership in the concert calendar development process, major renovation projects, and other matters. Assists and advises as needed and appropriate in the development/revision of building policies, consistent with campus policies and applicable regulations. The position may require some evening and weekend work, and requires the ability to undertake physical tasks (such as climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and reaching) to complete stage setup, movement of equipment and supplies, and other tasks.
The successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field, such as a performing arts discipline or technical theatre; at least three years of relevant experience in facility management, performance space management, or similar work; demonstrable knowledge of effective and safe operation of performance hall equipment; working knowledge of stage lighting, rigging, sound equipment and supplies; communication/interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of individuals and stakeholders including faculty, staff, students, and guests.
Preferred qualifications include a graduate degree in an appropriate field, such as a performing arts discipline or technical theatre; more than three years of relevant experience in performance space management or similar work; experience working in an academic environment; ETCP Certification as an Entertainment Electrician and/or Rigger; collaborative work across departments or areas in fostering the success of underrepresented groups.
