SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music Welcomes Audiences for Upcoming Concerts & Recitals

SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music will feature its talented students and world-renowned faculty artists in a series of upcoming live performances to kick off the Fall 2024 semester.
All performances are free, and the public is invited to attend.
Dr. Charles Guy, tuba, will present a faculty recital alongside Risa Okina, piano, on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m., in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater. The performance will include works by Anthony Plog, Alexander Tcherepnin, Lauren Bernofsky, Malcolm Arnold, Gustav Mahler and Telmo Marques.
The Crane Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the semester, titled “Regeneration,” on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m., in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall. The program includes an arrangement of Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture,” a new work (“Regeneration”) by young composer Kevin Charoensri, Jindrich Feld’s “Divertimento for Wind Orchestra,” and “The Black Horse Troop” by John Philip Sousa. The second half opens with “Sweet Chariot” by Carlos Simon, followed by the full “William Byrd Suite” by Gordon Jacob.
The Julia Trio will take the stage along with guest musicians in a faculty chamber recital on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m., in Snell Theater. The trio, including Risa Okina (piano), Timothy Yip (violin) and Chihiro Kakishima (violin), will open with Kosaku Yamada’s arrangement of Rentaro Taki’s “Song of the Ruined Castle,” a Japanese song dating to the Meiji period. Okina and Yip will be joined by Marie-Élaine Gagnon (cello) for the “Piano Trio No. 1 in D-Minor, Op. 32,” by Anton Aresky. Kakishima will join the others for the final piece, Gregoria Karides Suchy’s “String Quartet No. 1.”
Dr. Christopher Hernacki, trombone, will present a faculty recital on Monday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Snell Theater.
The next evening, soprano Margaret Chalker will present her own faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. in Snell Theater. Her recital will open with members of her voice studio joining in a performance of “Elegy” by Albin Zak. The rest of Chalker’s program, titled “Stories and Snippets,” will feature much-beloved operatic arias, including from Wagner’s “Die Walküre,” Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi,” Verdi’s “Rigoletto,” Bizet’s “Carmen,” Strauss’s “Der Rosenkavalier,” Menotti’s “The Counsul,” and Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” and “The Marriage of Figaro.”
Directed by Dr. Michael Dudley, the Crane Jazz Ensemble will present its fall concert on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Hosmer Hall.
Christine Hoerning (clarinet) and Keilor Kastella (piano) will join for a faculty chamber recital on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m., also in Snell Theater. The program includes works by Carl Maria von Weber, Amanda Harberg, Felix Mendelssohn and Mike Mower. Fellow faculty member Julianne Kirk Doyle (clarinet) will join for Mendelssohn’s “Konzertstück No. 2, Op. 114,” among other highlights of the evening.
Kathleen Miller, soprano, will present her own faculty recital on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m., also in Snell Theater.
