Office of Native American Affairs Coordinator Vacancy

The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DDEI) invites applications for a Coordinator of the Office of Native American Affairs. The Coordinator is a vital member of the DDEI administrative team and reports to the Associate VP/Chief Diversity Officer. A primary focus of the Coordinator will be to collaborate with the Office of Admissions, and other departments, on programming initiatives designed to increase the recruitment, retention, and graduation rate of Indigenous students and to maintain close working relationships with Native/Indigenous communities across the State, particularly Akwesasne Mohawks. 

Duties include:  working in collaboration with the Student Success Center, academic departments and other support services to support access, retention, persistence, and academic success of SUNY Potsdam’s indigenous students; plan, organize and evaluate initiatives/activities that improve indigenous students’ academic and social success; advise, mentor and assist students on a variety of academic, social and cultural issues and provide opportunity for cultural identity among the students; support and offer resources and educational opportunities for the campus community in order to promote a climate of cultural awareness and inclusion; assist the DDEI in providing the necessary support to retain the students; collaborate with the Center for Diversity (CFD) and other campus departments on programming which reflects the goals of the Division as well as support students’ intersecting identities.

Other responsibilities include:  assist the Modern Language department with Mohawk language course offerings; work with other campus units and external organizations to provide services and programs that encourage and expand inclusive excellence at SUNY Potsdam; collaborate with academic and administrative departments to increase understanding of the unique issues, trends and needs of indigenous students; organize targeted and campus-wide cultural activities to foster a better understanding of the culture of indigenous people; serve as a resource and guide for indigenous students who are having a difficult time adjusting to life on the SUNY Potsdam campus and in the North Country; support students in fostering a better understanding and appreciation of diversity and inclusion through events, workshops, conferences, and forums; work closely with the First Nation Student Association and other CFD clubs; serve on college committees; and other duties are assigned.

Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and the successful applicant must be able to work collaboratively with various campus constituents, possess facilitation and programming skills/experience, and must demonstrate a commitment to assist in building and sustaining a respectful, welcoming, inclusive and supportive campus environment for underrepresented students and especially our indigenous students. This position will also require some evening and weekend duties along with periodic travel. 

Strongly Preferred Qualifications: Professional experience working with Indigenous students, Master’s degree in Education, Counseling Psychology, Higher Education Administration, or related field, and at least three years’ experience.
