Community Performance Series will present ETHEL’s “Blue Dress” program on Friday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall at SUNY Potsdam. A presentation titled “Women in Music” will precede the event on March 2 at 2 p.m. in Sara M. Snell Theater.
In tribute to Women’s History Month, the post-modern indie-classical quartet ETHEL, through their “Blue Dress” program, pays special homage to the masterful women who are making their musical mark on the 21st century. This upcoming performance is meant to showcase the empowering women who bring fierceness, seductiveness and creativity to today’s music.
Founded in 1998 and based in New York City, ETHEL is comprised of Ralph Farris (artistic director, viola), Dorothy Lawson (artistic director, cello), Kip Jones (violin) and Corin Lee (violin). The group has long focused on the art of creative expression and creating a community of musical innovators.
“For nearly 18 years…ETHEL has been exploding the boundaries of conventional quartet music by combining its classical training with rock ’n’ roll enthusiasm and musical traditions from around the world.”– New Orleans Advocate
A free presentation titled “Women in Music,” will take place in addition to the performance. On March 2 at 2 p.m. in Sara M. Snell Theater, ETHEL will discuss the “Blue Dress” program, as well as women in the music industry and the history of women in music. The presentation is free and open to the public. No reservation is required.
“We are so excited to bring ETHEL back to Potsdam. They are incredible musicians and extremely dedicated educators. While on campus, the group will give a public presentation, work directly with Crane School of Music composition students, perform for local area school youth and perform for the public. As an arts presenter, you can’t ask for a more engaging group to come into your community,” says Interim Operations Director Jason L. Dominie.
