SUNY Potsdam will welcome a guest speaker for the second session of the College’s 2017 Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series.
Dr. Brian Winkel, a professor emeritus of mathematics at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, will visit Potsdam to discuss “Dabbling in Differential Equation Modeling,” on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at noon. The session will be held on the balcony in the Rebecca V. Sheard Literacy Center.
This is Winkel’s second time visiting campus, after having contributed to the seminar series in 2009.
During his session, Winkel will use counting principles and a physical simulation with M&M candies to introduce the principles of modeling with difference and differential equations. This demonstrated class activity will engage students on deep principles in modeling and applied mathematics. Winkel will also demonstrate other models involving physical situations, ultimately concentrating his talk on how modeling can motivate students.
After retiring from West Point, Winkel founded the Systemic Initiative for Modeling Investigations & Opportunities with Differential Equations, an open community of teachers and learners using modeling of first differential equations in an original way.
The Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar is sponsored by SUNY Potsdam's School of Education and Professional Studies. Since its inception 10 years ago, the School has hosted more than 100 presentations as part of the annual seminar.
All seminar meetings will be offered on Wednesdays, in the Literacy Center from noon to 1 p.m. These events are free, and the public is welcome to attend.
The remaining sessions for the Fall 2017 Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series are as follows:
- Oct. 18: Peter S. Brouwer, “The Courage to Teach: The Work of Parker Palmer”
- Nov. 1: Savita Hanspal, “Impact of Consumers' Self-Image and Demographics on Preference for Healthy Labeled Products”
- Nov. 15: Tyler L. St Clair, “The Funds of Knowledge Perspective: Integrating Diversity and Equity into Subject Area Methods Courses”
