WISER Escape from Winter

February 8, 2023

The Biology Department’s WISER Center invites all to their open house day on Friday, Feb. 24, 205 Stowell Hall.  Stop by to visit the greenhouse and attend hands-on workshops on plant care, hydroponics, and how to care for your indoor plants. The day will be filled with fun educational events and activities.

So please join us and get your mind into spring in the dead of winter.

Barrington Student Union Lobby

  • 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Food Security Tabling event - Local food security organizations will be sharing information on their efforts to improve food security in the North Country.
  • 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Paint a pot, pick a plant, take a plate - Women’s Rugby plant sale. Stop by the union and get a great deal for a small donation.

WISER Greenhouses (Stowell 205)

  • 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Office plants and how to care for them – WISER Coordinator, Ray Bowdish will give a hands-on workshop to help you be “green thumb” in your office.
  • 11 a.m. -12 p.m. Plant Propagation Workshop – WISER Staff members, Ren Bridgeford and Melanie Heidman will guide you thought the steps of making cuttings and transplanting propagated plants in this excellent “how to” hands-on session.
  • 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. Open greenhouse -The WISER Center and greenhouses will be open for causal touring. Members of the WISER Staff will be present to answer you questions about the facilities and our activities.
  • 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. Aeroponic Garden Workshop. Student intern, Harper Barrett will guide a hands-on workshop where you will construct and plant a Tower Garden.

Stowell 218 & WISER Greenhouses

  • 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Good bugs and bad bugs. Dr. Robert Snyder will guide you in insect identification and convince you of the real benefits of bugs!

WISER Center

  • 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Wonder around the WISER tour.  Stop in for a casual tour and Q&A session about the WISER Center facilities and activities.

WISER Greenhouses

  • 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Greenhouse 101- WISER Center Coordinator, Ray Bowdish will share his 40+ years of experience to demonstrate how modern greenhouses operate.  The benefits and challenges of growing in controlled environments will be addressed and participants will be encouraged to operate environmental controls and irrigation equipment.
