Music Education

M.M. in Music Education

The Master of Music in Music Education degree is in an in-person format designed for those with teaching positions, but is open to all qualified students. The coursework for the degree is typically completed in two consecutive summer semesters, with two additional online courses taken between the summers.

Students entering the Master of Music in Music Education degree are expected to have a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree or another Bachelor of Music degree with New York State (or equivalent) music teacher certification. For those persons holding initial certification to teach music K-12 in the State of New York, all degree programs in The Crane School of Music are designed to fulfill the academic requirements for professional certification to teach K-12 music in the State of New York.

Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • utilize inquiry tools to critically examine core topics and issues in their field of study.
  • develop and design a curriculum.
  • develop and present a synthesis of learning based upon the content of their graduate courses and their professional interests.

Music Educator Turned TikTok Influencer

With nearly 65,000 followers on TikTok, Laura Beth Wendelin ’17 & ’19—a self-proclaimed orchestra dork teacher—has become a surprise influencer overnight, sharing witty videos about instrument repair and providing advice to other teachers in the field as she launches her career as an elementary school music teacher. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in music education from Crane, Wendelin landed a job as an orchestra director at a middle school in eastern Connecticut, now inspiring students in the classroom and music teachers and students around the world through her social media presence.

Putting it All Together

Elira Mavraj ’22 & ’24 and a dozen other graduate students, many of whom are already working as music teachers around the state, are mastering technical instrument repair skills this summer at Crane. Taught by Musical Instrument Technician Miles DeCastro, the hands-on class offers students a unique opportunity to learn how to fix everything from flutes and clarinets to trumpets and trombones—invaluable knowledge to help them launch their careers as elementary, middle and high school music teachers.

After getting his bachelor’s degree in music education, Fuschetto returned to campus for an intensive one-year master’s program in music education—a decision that went hand-in-hand with his goal to improve his teaching skills before landing his first job as a music teacher.
