The Lougheed Center for Applied Learning is the first integrated academic opportunity center of its kind in SUNY. Our formal mission is to provide coordinated experiential learning opportunities that broaden and integrate students' knowledge and skills, to foster self discovery for engaged and life-long academic, personal and career success.

The Wild Connection

Jada West ’24 is working with a team of SUNY Potsdam researchers and students to unlock the secrets of pervasive and spreading tick-borne diseases with a goal of providing better information for the public.

Fabric of Learning

Weaving together academic research and applied learning experiences, Emily Bailey ’24 and Annabelle Kahle ’26 have been immersing themselves in unique hands-on research projects through the Presidential Scholars Program—examining the history of homespun garment manufacturing and using historical tools to create costumes that their ancestors would have worn.

Advocating for Others

A child of deaf adults, Julita Nunez ’24 has seen firsthand the struggles that people with disabilities often face. Advocating for her parents defined her youth, and impacted how she has interacted with everyone around her. Now, a senior at SUNY Potsdam, Nunez is working as a peer advisor to help prepare her classmates for their careers—a leadership role that has been the perfect training ground for her own career aspirations focused on helping people with disabilities, the incarcerated, or students in higher education.

Sustainability in Action

Spearheaded by Dr. Jessica Pearson and students from the Department of Environmental Studies, sustainability is taking a major leap forward at SUNY Potsdam this year. Food waste previously destined for the landfill will now be composted at Whitten Family Farms—and in the process the College will be saving money and making a positive impact on the environment.

During her time at SUNY Potsdam, Sara Behuniak ’14 landed an internship at the St. Lawrence County Public Defender’s Office—fully immersing herself in a law office for the first time her senior year, as she paved the way to an impressive career lawyer.

Working Hard for Others

Serena Rockingster ’19 is determined to live a life of giving. A magna cum laude graduate with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and a minor in women’s and gender studies, Rockingster, of Brooklyn, sees herself as a professor and clinical psychologist far down the road of her future. Before arriving there, she wants to assist a substantial caseload of people by providing them tools to assuage their psychological and emotional distress.

World Class Experiences

From working on the floor of the New York State Assembly to helping with hurricane recovery efforts in Puerto Rico, Julissa Santana ’20 graduated from SUNY Potsdam with unrivaled hands-on experiences. When she was just 13 years old, Santana left her home in the Dominican Republic for a completely new beginning in New York City.
