Mountains Give New Form to LeighAnn Montaglione

When she wraps up her final semester at SUNY Potsdam this spring and looks to new horizons, LeighAnn Montaglione ’20 will carry a keepsake with her. Her photo of the Adirondack mountains fills the 2018 cover of North Country Literary Magazine, and in three other inside pages of the student-run publication, her images are as quiet and eternal as the woods and their deep, cool rock.

Changes to Your Bill

When a student withdraws from a class, the length of the course and effective date of withdrawal determine whether or not the student receives any refund of tuition, fees, room and meal charges.

Dr. Janelle Jacobson

When students ask Assistant Professor Dr. Janelle Jacobson why they should study community health, she tells them the same thing that swayed her years ago. “When I started attending college, I thought I wanted to be an MD. I realized that, as a medical doctor, you can impact one person’s life at a time. But if you go into public health and do it well, you can impact a lot of people’s lives at once,” she said.

A Family Affair

When Susan Vroman Cavanagh ’77 thinks about SUNY Potsdam, she thinks about family—not only because her younger siblings (opera singer Lisa Vroman ’79 and School of Education Alumni Board President David Vroman ’83) followed in her footsteps at the College, but because her time at The Crane School of Music was formed by special relationships that made Potsdam feel like home.

Realizing His Dreams

When Wilber Parada ’20 arrived at SUNY Potsdam his freshman year as a first-generation college student, he already had a vision for his future. His plans to one day become a Doctor of Physical Therapy would involve years of hard work, completing undergraduate and graduate degrees, and passing the National Physical Therapy Examination.

Credits That Count

When you register for each semester, SUNY Potsdam will track whether your credits count toward your degree program using Student Outcome Tracking (SOT), an application that integrates with BearDeN (DegreeWorks). Federal and state regulations stipulate that you are eligible for financial aid only if you are registered for aid-eligible credits; aid-eligible credits are credits that count towards your primary major degree requirements.

Ty Santiago ’17, Gold Nanoparticle Research

When you think of gold, it’s normally associated with wealth rather than health. SUNY Potsdam alumnus Ty Santiago ’17 is turning that perspective on its head while researching new methods for administering chemotherapeutics through gold nanoparticles. “We load them up (gold nanoparticles) with our anti-cancer drugs and it acts as a vehicle and carries them to the target site,” said Santiago. “You’re not seeing damage to healthy tissue to the extent that you would with the traditional method.”

Theft of State Property

Whenever state property is found missing or to have been stolen, the Office of University Police is to be notified immediately. University Police personnel will initiate an immediate investigation and prepare and file required investigative reports.
