Music Business Program
Our programs are designed for students who want to earn a place in the music business industry. We provide the preparation for employment in:
- Music Products
- Arts Administration
- Recording Industry
Our programs combine our traditional strengths in musical excellence with coursework in music business and courses offered through the Department of Business Administration. We provide you with a solid foundation both in music and performance as well as knowledge about what makes the industry tick. Our faculty are true experts in audio technology, music retail, music production and music product development. They know the score!
The Crane School of Music offers two degree types for the Music Business major:
- Loading... - the Bachelor of Music degree requires a formal audition and contains a high percentage of music-focused courses in areas such as music theory, music history, and performance, including seven semesters of private studio lessons
- New: Music Business, B.S. - the Bachelor of Science degree does not require an audition; instead, students have to demonstrate musicality through a less formal process in order to be admitted to the program. The B.S. degree has fewer credits of music-focused courses than the B.M. degree (about 40%)
Students in both versions of the Music Business major take courses in business and the music industry, and are required to obtain practical experience in their chosen field through two internships.
We also offer a Music Business Minor for music majors and non-music majors. (There is no audition for non-music majors who minor in Music Business.)
“We have an awesome music business program at Crane. I wasn’t aware of that going into college, and it seemed like a no-brainer to switch over. The music business program offers marketable skills as I focus on a career as a musician.”

From 2006 to 2020 music business students at Crane participated in The NAMM Show held each January in Anaheim, California. The students have worked as interns for industry sponsors gaining valuable experience working in the industry's biggest trade show and forming important industry relationships. Crane is the only college program in the country that has afforded their students this opportunity and often sponsored a NAMM version of the Sandy Feldstein Roundtable during the NAMM show.
