The College Counseling Center provides brief solution-based psychological services to students experiencing emotional or situational difficulties. Information shared in counseling is treated with the "strictest" confidence.
Records at the Center are strictly confidential. Records are only released with the student's written consent or by a court-ordered subpoena. Information about student contacts for psychological services is not released to other campus departments, outside agencies, family, or friends. Even the fact that a student has been at the Counseling Center is confidential.
The services provided by the Counseling Center are free, with the exception of the "No-show/Late Cancellation". Please review the Informed Consent for Student Counseling Services (PDF).
Counseling Center Staff
The Counseling Center Staff represents a broad skill set of evidence based therapeutic modalities to address a multitude of challenges. All of our counselors are licensed in New York State as Mental Health Counselors (LMHC’s) or Master Social Workers (LMSW’s). How Can Counseling Help?
Counseling can assist you in the following ways:
- Provide a safe, accepting and confidential atmosphere where you can discuss your concerns, thoughts and feelings and identify specific goals to work on.
- Develop a trusting relationship with an objective professional who is a trained to act as an agent of change to assist individuals in improving their current well-being.
- Assist students in identifying maladaptive behaviors and integrating healthy, positive coping skills.

College Counseling Center Mission Statement
The College Counseling Center assists matriculated SUNY Potsdam students in becoming mature, healthy and thoughtful citizens within our community and those which they live after graduation. To this end, we believe that all students have the ability to become self-actualized, responsible and civil.
The College Counseling Center is dedicated to the purposes of creating therapeutic relationships and using evidence-based treatment to empower students to utilize knowledge and skills that will provide collective psychological security to the SUNY Potsdam community and to the world they ultimately come to work and live in once they have graduated.
