Presidential Challenge Coins

Thanking those who make a difference

This fall, President Suzanne Smith started a new tradition at SUNY Potsdam that's all about spreading our gratitude and sharing good vibes. Every new student will be presented with a shiny new silver challenge coin during convocation. This coin isn't meant to stay in your pocket, though – it's a chance to say thanks in a unique way.

"I know from firsthand experience that receiving one of these coins is a deeply meaningful gesture, and I’m so proud to be able to bring this tradition to SUNY Potsdam."

Dr. Suzanne Smith

Hold on to your coin throughout your journey at SUNY Potsdam, as a reminder of the value that others play in your personal success and the importance of finding a support system to help you through.

As you approach Commencement, that's your chance to pass on your Potsdam pride! Present your coin to someone who has made a difference in your life or impacted your college journey. It could be an inspiring professor, a staff mentor, a community member, an internship supervisor, a family member or your best friend who saw you through it all. At SUNY Potsdam, we value connections and the relationships our students form, both on and off campus. Giving away the silver challenge coin is a meaningful way to thank someone for their encouragement and support.

In turn, graduates will receive a special maroon challenge coin of your own at Commencement to celebrate all of your achievements in your path to earning a degree. Along with your diploma, it's a keepsake to honor the relationships you built here at SUNY Potsdam.
