TRIO Student Support Services offers one on one counseling with our students, giving you individual support and guidance for your particular situation(s).
Services available to TRIO SSS participants:
Individualized consultation is available in the following areas:
- Learning and Study Skill Development
TRIO staff provide academic tutoring in learning strategies, study skills and time management. These services may be offered to you prior to assigning you (a) peer content tutor(s) or as a supplement to your peer content tutoring. - Academic Planning
Course planning prior to meeting with academic advisors; identifying the consequences of selecting the S/U option for a course or for dropping or withdrawing from a course; and/or transferring to another school or withdrawing from SUNY Potsdam. - Peer Content Tutoring
TRIO initially accepts one (1) tutor request from each participant. Requests are accepted from the beginning of the second week of each semester. Tutor requests are fulfilled subject to tutor availability.
TRIO is unable to provide tutors in the following areas:- technique courses such as: Art, Dance, Drama, Music and Theatre;
- senior seminar courses in any department;
- cross registration and/or on-line courses offered by another institution.
- Advocacy
TRIO staff members not only advocate for students, but also assist them in becoming strong self-advocates. - Enhanced Early Alerts
- Academic Recovery Program
TRIO staff members work closely with students on Warning or Probation to regain Acceptable Academic Standing.
Academic Resources
125 Sisson Hall is available to TRIO participants for tutoring/studying. It has two desktop computers with multiple platforms, but no printers.
TRIO TiP Sheets on a variety of learning skills, study strategies, forming study groups, test taking, advising basics, etc. are available upon request from TRIO staff.

TRIO SSS offers tutoring to active TRIO participants. All tutoring is free of charge and is available for various lower-level and certain upper-division undergraduate courses. Tutoring sessions are facilitated by trained and experienced peer tutors. Learn More
Laptops are available for loan on a semesterly basis as supplies last. Students must be active TRIO SSS participants. The loaner program is administered through the Computing & Technology Services (CTS) Office. Pickups and returns are done in person at the CTS Office located in 103 Stillman Hall.
Part of your college experience is to grow and develop as a human being. Our staff is here to help you discover yourself and grow into the person you want to be.
- Individual Advising
Short-term advising is available to assist participants with personal issues affecting academic success. Counseling referrals also may be made as appropriate. - Peer Mentoring
Any TRIO SSS freshman who is interested is assigned a TRIO SSS Peer Mentor. Our mentors are upperclassmen TRIO SSS members who are available to help you with your transition to campus life.
Individual Consultation
TRIO staff members are available to advise participants in Financial Aid education including completion of FAFSA, understanding financial aid, paying your college bill, and exploring scholarships. Staff members are also available to advise participants in areas of personal finance education including developing a budget, learning about banking, understanding credit, and searching for student employment.

Individual Consultation
The TRIO Program Counselor is available to advise participants in areas such as searching for and applying to graduate schools, preparing for entrance exams, searching for scholarships and fellowships, exploring career paths, and writing resumes and cover letters.
