Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

The State University of New York at Potsdam has established an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to oversee the responsible use of animals in university research and instructional activities. The IACUC reviews protocols, reviews the animal care and use program, and monitors University animal facilities to ensure compliance with standards and regulatory requirements.

Federal, state and University regulations require the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) review all research projects, classroom or other activities, with or without external funding, that involve the use of animals in research. These regulations pertain to any research conducted by anyone affiliated with the University regardless of where the activity occurs.

Each Investigator, staff and/or student that is involved in the study who will have contact with the animal subjects or raw data is required to complete animal subjects research training through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). Some researchers may be required to complete more than one set of training modules dependent on the type of research being done and the funding source. Researchers are also required to complete a refresher training course every three (3) years.

Effective November 1, 2009, SUNY Potsdam adopted revisions to its policies regarding animals on campus to create appropriately differentiated policies for display animals and animals actively used for research and teaching purposes.

The IACUC no longer oversees the animals being used only for display purposes. Those animals known as display animals are now overseen by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. All inquiries regarding display animals should be directed to the Environmental Health and Safety Officer, Torey Russell at 267-2596.
