SUNY Potsdam Announces New Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Biomedical Sciences, Leading to Medicine & Health Careers

SUNY Potsdam is proud to announce a new Bachelor of Science degree program in biomedical sciences, offering students a flexible new pathway to careers in medicine and healthcare.
The new B.S. in Biomedical Sciences is designed to equip students with a strong academic foundation in both the natural and social sciences, while allowing them the flexibility to tailor their coursework to align with their specific career aspirations. The program is ideal for students pursuing advanced careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, and other health professions. Whether preparing for entrance exams like the MCAT or DAT, or seeking hands-on experience in clinical settings, students will gain the expertise needed to excel.
The degree combines rigorous academic preparation and the flexibility to customize courses for several post-graduate health career programs. The unique combination of natural and social science courses prepares students to understand the disease process and health outcomes, and how to effectively relate to patients in a wide variety of medical settings.

Beyond academic coursework, students will engage in experiential learning that enhances their readiness for healthcare careers. From direct patient care and shadowing opportunities with healthcare professionals, to health coaching through a partnership with St. Lawrence Health Systems, students will graduate with both the knowledge and practical skills sought by employers in the healthcare field.
“The inspiration for our new program came from our students and the healthcare providers at St. Lawerence Health in Potsdam. Students want a rigorous yet flexible major that allows them to switch career aspirations without changing majors. The healthcare providers at our local hospital recognize the need for both medical knowledge and the ability to effectively communicate with their patients. This new degree requires that students do both,” said Associate Professor Dr. Robert Ewy, who chairs the College’s health professions program.
This program is designed for students who are interested in moving on from their undergraduate studies to pursue careers as physician assistants, medical doctors, dentists, audiologists, optometrists , or veterinarians.
