SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music Welcomes Audiences for Upcoming Free Performances
SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music will feature its talented students and in a series of nearly daily upcoming live performances this month.
All performances are free, and the public is invited to attend.
The Crane Concert Band will take the stage tonight in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m., conducted by Jill Nelson Roberts. The performance will open with an arrangement of “Armenian Dances” by Aram Khachaturian, followed by Jodie Shaw’s “Peace Dancer” and two works by Percy Aldridge Grainger. The band will present “Song for the Strong” by Kelijah Dunton, and close the performance with Julie Giroux’s “Symphony No. IV, Bookmarks from Japan.”
The Crane Symphonic Band will follow up tomorrow, Thursday, April 10, with a concert at 7:30 p.m., also in Hosmer Hall. Directed by Dr. Brian K. Doyle, the band will present works by Joseph Wilcox Jenkins, Carlos Simon and Karel Husa, as well as the ensemble premiere of “And With This New Day,” a new work by William Owens, inspired by writings of Eleanor Roosevelt. Following a brief intermission, the band will close the concert with “Pocket” by Sally Lamb McCune and the “Enigma Variations” by Edward Elgar.
The Crane Chorus will offer a spring performance on Friday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m., in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater. Conducted by Dr. Meagan Dissinger, the chorus will open with “Come Ready and See Me” by Richard Hundley and “Cuando Tu No Estas” by Liliana Cangiano. A trio of night-themed works will include Cait Nishimura’s “See You in the Stars,” Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s “The Evening Star,” and a choral arrangement of “Rather Be/Some Nights.” The performance will conclude with Eric Whitacre’s “Home” and Kirsten Pagel’s “The Parting Glass.”
On Monday, April 14, three small student groups will present a string chamber music recital at 7:30 p.m. in Snell Theater. The program will include Astor Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons of Buenos Aires,” Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Piano Quintet in C-Minor” and Ludwig van Beethoven’s “String Quartet Op. 18, No. 4.” The 12 string and piano performers are coached by Dr. Young-Ah Tak and Dr. Shelly Tramposh.
The Chamber Music Competition Winners Concert will be offered on Tuesday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m., also in Snell Theater. The performance will highlight three winning student groups, presenting small ensemble works. The third place winning group, a percussion quartet dubbed 20 cents, will present the first movement of “Perspective," by Jlin. The second place winners, a marimba duo titled Black and Bleu, will perform “Sweet Dreams and Time Machines” by Michael Burritt. Finally, the first place winners, a saxophone quartet called the No Show Quartet, will close with “Mountain Roads” by David Maslanka. The featured students include Wyatt Calcote, Jack Corolla, Nathaniel Cobb, Ryan Dunia, Kevin Malone, Matthew Puhlman, Kennedy Royal, Eli Sutton and Bailey Yerdon.
Continuing the busy schedule of student performances, The Crane School of Music is also set to offer upcoming concerts by:
- The Crane Guitar Ensemble, performing Tuesday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m., in Snell Theater.
- The Crane Jazz Ensemble, performing Thursday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m., in Snell Theater.
- The Eclectic Ensemble, performing Friday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m., in Snell Theater.
- The Crane Wind Ensemble, performing Monday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m., in Hosmer Hall.
