As an educational institution, SUNY Potsdam believes that the best approach to avoiding the risks of alcohol consumption is education. You have to take personal responsibility for yourself and sometimes for your friends.
There are many resources for learning about the effects of alcohol as well as ongoing drug and alcohol awareness educational programs on this campus, across New York State and nationwide.
Programs Presented by SUNY Potsdam's Health Educator:
- BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening Intervention for College Students): This is a quick, easy, and confidential tool to provide individual students with feedback regarding their personal alcohol use compared to other people of the same gender. This intervention will help students make better choices.
- Alcohol Education: This is a fun and interactive program addressing issues surrounding college-aged drinking. NYS Laws, Blood Alcohol Content, Responsible Drinking, Avoiding Drinking Games, Personal and Community Responsibility, Using a Designated Driver and How to Help a Friend are some of the topics covered in this presentation.
- On-Line Alcohol Education: SUNY Potsdam provides an on-line alcohol education course for students who have judicial sanctions as a result of their alcohol use.
- Alcohol Use/Abuse Assessment: Currently, SUNY Potsdam does not have an alcohol counselor on staff. However, we have a wonderful relationship with the alcohol and other drug counselors at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. If you find you are in need of this type of assessment, please contact : (315) 261-5954 and ask for the college student assessment program.
