The following services will be offered to students enrolled in the Bridges program at SUNY Potsdam:
Orientation Program:
- All Bridges students will connect with their dedicated Bridges Advisor and dive into the incredible program services available. This is also when students will take an exciting first step toward success by signing a learning contract that outlines their commitments and sets the stage for a successful college journey!
Academic Support:
- Bridges students will meet with their dedicated Bridges Advisor at least twice a month during their first semester, creating an amazing opportunity to stay on top of their academic progress. These meetings offer personalized guidance and support, helping students thrive academically, socially, and professionally.
Course Scheduling:
- Throughout their time in the program, Bridges students meet with their Bridges Advisor to select courses and better understand the College’s General Education Program and academic requirements. This guidance helps students stay focused and make informed decisions about their academic journey.
Tutoring Assistance
- Students can request free tutoring assistance for a variety of content courses, provided tutors are available.
- There are several tutoring options for students, which can be found online. The SUNY Potsdam Writers' Block and Math Lab provide individual tutoring for applicable courses. Some students may also be eligible for free one-on-one tutoring through TRIO.
Bridges Group Meetings
- Bridges students are required to attend group meetings throughout the semester, covering both academic and non-academic topics. These meetings are designed to support a smooth transition into college and provide valuable tools for success.
- The Bridges Director will directly notify students when meetings are scheduled.
Selecting A Major
- While many of our students enter their first year with a declared major, the Bridges program remains focused on supporting those who are still exploring their options to help them identify a field of study that aligns with their goals and interests.
- During the fall semester, students will meet with their Bridges Advisor to explore options and participate in career programs that introduce them to academic departments at Potsdam. Program activities throughout each semester are designed to help students refine their career goals and choose a major that aligns with their aspirations.
- After students officially declare a major, they will receive advising from a faculty member in their chosen department. However, they are still expected to maintain regular meetings with their Bridges Advisor.
Bridges Student Restrictions
Since getting off to a strong academic start is very important, Bridges students are encouraged to register for 15 credit hours during their first semester. This approach helps ensure steady progress toward a degree while maintaining a manageable workload.
