What is the Bridges Program?
The Bridges Program is a two-year special admissions initiative at SUNY Potsdam designed to support students who do not meet regular admissions standards but demonstrate potential for success. By providing personalized academic support and advising, the program helps students transition smoothly into college life and succeed from the start.
How do students join the Bridges Program?
Students are enrolled in the Bridges Program upon their acceptance to SUNY Potsdam, based on their admissions qualifications. Students cannot apply to the program directly.
What kind of support do Bridges students receive?
Bridges students receive one-on-one academic counseling, access to tutoring, and exclusive workshops that focus on building essential skills for both academic success and personal growth. The program provides support for academic, social, financial, and career concerns.
Why is the program beneficial?
Bridges students frequently excel due to the program’s personalized support. With a smaller advisor-to-student ratio and tailored resources, students receive the attention they need to navigate their first year and beyond with confidence.
Are the College’s academic standards different for Bridges students?
No. Bridges students enroll in the same courses as other SUNY Potsdam students. However, all first-year students are required to take a First Year Success Seminar.
Do Bridges students receive additional financial aid?
No, Bridges students receive the same financial aid package as any other SUNY Potsdam student. Program eligibility does not affect your financial aid status.
What are the program requirements?
Bridges students are required to meet regularly with their academic counselor and participate in mandatory group meetings and workshops. These sessions are designed to ensure students stay on track academically and are making progress toward their goals.
What is the transition to regular services after completing the program?
Students will receive support throughout their first two academic years at SUNY Potsdam. Afterward, they’ll transition to standard student services, and if they’ve declared a major, their academic advising will be handled by faculty within their chosen department.
