I. Introduction:
Notebook computers issued to staff are to be used for work related purposes only. They are not intended to be used as a substitute for a personal or home computer. You will be held personally responsible for any actions or compromised information resulting from the loss, theft, or misuse of the computer.
In addition to this policy and any standing departmental policies, all staff are bound by the following campus and SUNY policies:
-
SUNY Potsdam "Information Technology Acceptable Use Policy"
-
State University of New York University wide policy "Use of Facilities by Non-Commercial Organizations - Use of Computer Services" http://www.suny.info/policies/groups/public/documents/appendices/pub_suny_pp_037768.htm
II. Safeguarding Information:
To assist you and to ensure compliance, the following practices must be followed:
-
Notebook computers are not to be shared, used by friends or family members, or loaned to anyone (including just for a minute).
-
Potsdam Campus Computer Account (CCA) passwords must be set to something other than an existing password used on a home computer(s). Having unique passwords reduces the likelihood of an unauthorized person tampering with or using the laptop.
-
Don't ever leave your computer unattended.
-
Don't allow an unauthorized computer repair facility or willing friend to service or install software on your computer. Bring it to the IT Service Desk.
-
Keep your computer in a secure and locked location when not in use. Your car is never considered to be a secure location even when locked.
-
Don't collect and/or store confidential information (e.g. social security numbers, birthdates, credit cards, etc) on the computer.
-
Don't tamper with antivirus settings.
-
Don't tamper with Windows Update (Windows users) settings or Software Update settings (macOS users). Install updates when prompted to do so.
III. Identity Theft:
To reduce the likelihood of becoming the next victim of identity theft, you need to avoid Internet phishing scams, Trojan horses, root kits, viruses, spyware, etc. by:
-
Not responding to emails requesting personal account information verification (phishing).
-
Limiting your use of the Edge browser. Use Edge only if absolutely required by trusted sites (well known companies and organizations).
-
CTS has installed the Firefox and Chrome browsers on your computer and recommends you use it as a full-time alternative to Edge.
