Identification of Risk Factors Affecting Musician Health and Performance

Project Overview The annual rate of injury among musicians is comparatively high relative to other professions, an estimate of 37% in musicians for example, compared to 13.7% in nursing/care facilities and 9% in fields such as police protection (OSHA, 2016). Further, lifetime prevalence of musician injury has been reported to be as high as 93% (Kok et al., 2016). It is widely thought that injury rates among musicians are related both to the repetitive physical loads on the body and aspects related to the demands of playing a particular instrument.

HEARTH

Project Overview Students collaborating in the HEARTH experience will have the opportunity to study the deep historical relationships between people, technology, and the environment through the application of experiential and experimental archaeology. Through guided research projects and public facing workshops, students will help generate knowledge about the complex interfaces between people and technology. Simultaneously, students will gain practical skills that can be directly applied in the workplace and in graduate school.

Ancient Climates and Environments

Project OverviewThe goal of this project is to gain a better understanding of how carbon cycled through the atmosphere, oceans, and sediments in deep time. We will accomplish this by describing and analyzing rocks that formed in shallow marine environments in order to understand the processes that were active when they were being deposited, the details of the environments that they formed in, and using this information to reconstruct sea level history.
